Echo’s Heartbeat

Only seven hundred grams of silk and grace, a tiny shadow seeking out its place. The smallest of the litter, shy and still, you climbed the mountain of my heart with will.

a love that didn’t need the sun to rise. When I was gone, you felt the empty air, and curled away in silence and despair. You wouldn’t eat, you wouldn’t drink or play, you waited for my heartbeat through the grey. And when I came, you claimed your rightful throne – my chest, the only home you’d ever known.

My heart is cold, an empty, hollow room, stolen by the winter and the gloom. They let us down; they turned their eyes away, while you were fighting hard to find the day. I’d give my breath to see your eyes once more, to hear your tiny paws across the floor.

But though you’ve gone, you haven’t left my side, there is no rift of death that can divide. For soon, your dust will meet the needle’s sting, to be the ink to which my spirit clings. Your nose, your paws, etched deep into the skin, right where your favorite place has always been. You’re in the ink, you’re in the blood I beat, our union now is final and complete.

Rest now, my Echo, small and soft and true, the chest you loved will always carry you.
